Theatrical Realms of the Whimsical & Tragic introduces an additional chapter and technique to the on-going body of Grant’s shadow-based photographic series, Night Journey. The newest works present far more complicated narratives within the imagery while also experimenting with sound and video projection within the installation. Continuing to use shadow as metaphor, the work portrays a theatrical world that references the ridiculous, the tragic and the unexpected. By using mythic characters and incongruous objects, the fabricated tableaux’s are intended to capture lost and forgotten fragments of experience and emotion and introduce the viewer to an imaginary world of life on the lyrical and playful edge of balance and stability.
