Michael Roch

The Armchair Naturalist

The paintings and sculpture in The Armchair Naturalist play off of Michael Roch's loving and mnemonic view of the animal and natural world.  Each animal is depicted from the memory of the first time it was seen by Roch as a new and strange specimen. Nuzzling animals, native grasses, nuzzling pachyderms and elegant raptors roll in and out of Roch’s paintings and sculptures. In Galapagos Bunnies, a delicately rendered pair of rabbits are surrounded by an intricate weave of rusted tubing.  The pieces create a frame - one literal, one visual – that like the 1997 Britannic field guide for weary urbanites, The Armchair Naturalist, satirically condense and compress the natural world.

Sterling Rainbow

Tami Demaree, Steven Hull & Dani Tull

In Sterling Rainbow three California artists, Demaree, Tull and Hull, recall the late 1960's, the blooming of the flower children, hippie culture, easy drugs and the transition into psychedelic hard rock of the early 70s. The works, which include paintings, drawings, sculpture and collage, take as their starting point the Black Sabbath song Lord of this World

Tami Demaree received her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Most recently her work was exhibited at Angstrom Gallery in Los Angeles and Steve Wolf Gallery San Francisco.

Dani Tull received his MFA at Stanford University in 1990. He has most recently exhibited at Galerie Haus Schneider Uschi Kolb, Karlsruhe, Germany, Angstrom Gallery in Los Angeles and in the 2007 LA Weekly Annual Biennial at Track 16 Gallery, Santa Monica, CA.

Steven Hull received his MFA California Institute of Arts, Valencia.  He is represented by Rosamund Felsen Gallery, Santa Monica, CA and has exhibited widely including: Angstrom Gallery, Los Angeles and Lisa Boyle Gallery, Chicago.  Hull's production includes painting, drawing, animation, sculpture and writing.   In 2007, he published  "Nothing Moments" a project involving 100 participants that resulted in 24 books each illustrated, written and designed by different participants. The resulting exhibition traveled to Los Angles, San Francisco, Dallas, New York, Portland, Miami and Chicago.

PROJECT ROOM

Tim Sullivan

Sullivan’s photographs and videos are a playful combination of images of popular culture and metaphysical symbols of high culture. The artist explores the self-critical tendency within modern art. However, the appeal of Sullivan’s art lies in his ingenious ability to translate complex, multi-layered ideas and aesthetic discourses into humorous, seemingly light-hearted visual images.

Sullivan earned his MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in 2004 and a BA from Evergreen State College. He has since exhibited widely including:  Lisa Dent Galley, San Francisco; E-Transit/ Atelier Foskal, Warsaw, Poland and the 2006 California Biennial organized by the Orange County Art Museum, Newport Beach, CA.  Summer of 2008, Tim had solo show at the Collector's Contemporary in Singapore, and has a coming solo show at Ardbia Gallery, in Galway, Ireland.  His work in included in the collections of the Orange County Museum of Art and Deutsch Bank, NY, NY.
