Kenneth Holder
Tip of the Iceberg
For the last 30 years Kenneth Holder has been waiting for the opportunity to hitch a ride on the Chihuahua-Pacific Railroad in northern Mexico to see the magnificent Copper Canyon, a canyon said to be four times as wide as the Grand Canyon. The opportunity finally arrived in January of 2007. Holder's latest paintings create a sense of place through re-creating the same canyon view at different times of the day and from varying perspectives, scales and palettes. Holder strives to be true to nature without being constrained by literalness. For Holder, landscape painting is a means for exploring our relationship to nature and self. In the end, each painting provides a unique view of Copper Canyon and for some an opportunity to experience our sense of place in the universe through a connection with nature.
Ken Holder lives in Heyworth, Illinois. He received his BFA from Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth in 1959 and his MFA from the Chicago Art Institute in 1965. He was a professor of painting at Illinois State University from 1969 until 1998. His work is held in numerous corporate and private collections in Illinois and Texas.

PROJECT ROOM
Mary Emma Hawthorne
Africa
Inspired from a recent trip to Africa and created from several pieces of collected papers and materials from that trip, Dallas artist Mary Emma Hawthorne has assembled a body of work that is both familiar and exotic. In simple collages and paintings on panel, Hawthorne communicates the poverty and richness of a culture and people that had a profound effect on her work.
Mary Emma Hawthorne received a B.F.A. from Texas Christian University in 2004 and has shown in several venues throughout Texas and Dallas since. This will be the second showing of Hawthorne’s work in the Conduit Gallery Project Room.
