Annabel Daou
Sex & Politics
Sex & Politics consists of 101 small
drawings, the substance of which is culled from dozens of unsolicited
bulk electronic messages. Daou cut and strung together the text to form
small tableaus or installments. In each of these drawings, as with her
paintings, the abstract mark-making gestures of the linguistic and numeric
symbols become thought-scapes of shared and dissonant cultural and political
experiences. The show will also include two constructed boxes from which
partial readings of the drawings will emanate.
Since 2006, Lebanese born New York artist Annabel Daou has exhibited
at; dm.contemporary, Long Island, NY; Adam Baumgold
Gallery, New York, NY; Gallery Joe, Philadelphia, PA; Josee Bienvenu
Gallery, New York, NY; The Tang Museum, Sarasota Springs, NY; The
Dreamland Artist's Club, produced by Creative Time, Coney Island,
NY and Makor Gallery, New York, NY

Stephen
Lapthisophon
Writing Art Cinema 1977 2007
The
show title Writing Art Cinema 1977 2007 serves as a marker for
Stephen Lapthisophon's newest exhibition that will include artworks
dating between 1977 and 2007 (the years he lived in Chicago, Illinois)
and the subject matter he engages: historical writings, art and artists,
and movies. One gallery space will show drawings and collages, mostly
text based, dating from 1997 to 2007. A smaller gallery has been constructed
for the purpose of the showing a unique body of candle drawings. The
candle drawings carry associations of light, knowledge and also serve
as a metaphor for the act of reading.
Stephen Lapthisophon studied Comparative Literature and Theory at Northwestern
University and received an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute
of Chicago. He spent the next thirty years living and working in the
Chicago area. In August of 2007, he relocated to Dallas after spending
a residency at the University of Texas at Dallas Artist in Residence
program. Exhibitions since 2000 include: Kunstverein Ingan, Berlin,
Germany; Corbitt vs. Dempsey, Chicago, IL, the Lincoln Park Conservatory,
Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago, IL; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago,
IL; Barrow & Juarez Gallery, Milwaukee, Wisconson and Institute for
Contemporary Art Overgaden, Copenhagen, Denmark.
A
forty-page catalog documenting the exhibiton will be available for purchase.

PROJECT ROOM
Raul Vincent Enriquez
...and
Religion
The
Conduit Gallery Project Room will feature a sound and video installation
by Raul Vincent Enriquez. …and Religion sets the stage at a five-course
meal that has taken place in Brooklyn over six hours. Enriquez unveils
how hosts use charm and gestures to moderate the touchy topics of politics,
sex and religion. Time and subject simultaneously compressed and expanded.
A single iPod imbedded into the wall and headphones acting as speakers
will construct an ambiguously seductive relationship between the audible
and the visual - in sync, but slightly out of reach of each other.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Enriquez lives and works in Brooklyn,
NY. His background in sound, theater, video and performance art have
lead to numerous exhibitions including: Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions
(LACE), Los Angeles, CA; Scope New York; Queens Museum of Art, Queens,
NY; The Art Video Lounge, ART BASEL, Miami Beach; Scope London, London;
Cal Arts, Los Angeles; New Museum of Contemporary Art, NYC; Resonant
Wave Festival, Berlin and Prix ARS Electronica 2002, Vienna, Austria.
