Steven
Hull & Garland Fielder
opening
reception for the artists:
Friday,
July 28, 2006 6 to 8 PM
In a two-person show in the gallery's main exhibition
space, Denton based Garland Fielder and Oakland artist Steven Hull delight
in a push and pull relationship between strong, quiet abstraction and
colorful tie-dyed surrealism.
Oakland based artist Steven Hull has become internationally known for
his high concept collaborative multi-artist projects as well as his
own work that includes fantastical narratives thickly painted on board
and small-scale drawings that depict hybrid figures both dreamlike and
nightmarish.
Recent exhibitions include; Rosamund Felson Gallery, Santa Monica, CA;
Steven Wolfe Fine Arts, San Francisco, CA; Galerie Rolf Ricke, Köln,
Germany; The San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, CA; Gazon Rouge Gallery,
Athens, Greece and Roger Smith Gallery, New York, NY.
Starting with the Necker Cube as a metaphor for interpretation, Garland
Fielder's serene encaustic paintings develop instances of absurdity,
reflection and humor stemming from the exploration of mathematical and
geometric principles.
Garland Fielder is a recent MFA graduate from The University of North
Texas in Denton. Recent exhibitions include; an artist residency at
the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing, China; The Focus and Azalea galleries
in San Francisco, CA; The University of Art and Design in Helsinki,
Finland; The Commerce Street Artist's Warehouse, Houston, TX and Rudolph
Projects/Art Scan Gallery, Houston, TX.
Andrew Long
For his first Dallas exhibition, Austin artist
Andrew Long will show a series of mixed scale paintings on Baltic birch
panel. For the past twenty years, Andrew Long has worked in a variety
of media including photography, collage and installation. These most
recent works are a return to painting using color and thick layers of
paint resulting in wonderfully clumsy shapes suspended within a field
of ambiguous space.
Andrew Long received his BFA from The University of Texas at Austin
in 1986 and has since exhibited in Austin as well as McMurtrey Gallery,
Houston, TX; Sidebar, Denver, CO; Brycliff Art Colony, Woodstock, NY
and Collyer Bristow Gallery, London, UK.

David
VanNess
The
Stackable Cow
David Van Ness' Stackable Cow project is a meditation by the
artist on the genetic alteration, the manufacturing world of commodities,
packaging, shipping and marketing. Drawing from industrial and car design,
Van Ness sculpted the original stackable cow and developed a digital
file version that was sent to China to be mass-produced.
The end result is a three and a half inch plastic "cow unit" that can
be stacked into a box, a pyramid or a sixteen until arch.
David Van Ness received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2003
and his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2001. David
Van Ness lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
