Matthew
Bourbon
Crass,
Cruel and Uncouth
Each painting is an isolated
moment, not one connected to the other but similarly distilled from
an illusive interaction. These interactions are collected by the artist
from photographs, movies, magazine advertising and comic books.
Matthew Bourbon transforms the inherent messages of these sources in
order to redefine or enhance their pictorial meaning. The end result
is an array of techni-colored visual dreams that evoke a multitude of
meanings and voyeuristic intrigue.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Matthew Bourbon earned separate
undergraduate degrees in Studio Art and Art History from the University
of California at Davis. He earned a M.F.A. degree from the School of
Visual Arts, NY, NY.
In 2000 he moved to Texas and is a Professor of Art at the University
of North Texas in Denton, TX.
Along with exhibiting art, he also contributes periodic articles and
reviews to Flash Art International, New York Arts Magazine and Artlies.
He has continued to show both in New York and California since relocating
to Texas.
Exhibitions since 2004 include; The Bowery Gallery, NY, NY; The Artcar
Museum, Houston, TX; Trunk Space, Phoenix, AZ; International Art Expo
2005, Salone de Arte Contemporanea, Trieste, Italy; Shajah Art Museum,
Sharjah, United Arab Emirates; Brent Sikkema Gallery, NY, NY; Cricket
Engine Gallery, Oakland, CA and Gallery 32, London, England.
